Working with the Obligatories & the 39/46 Series

A Multi-Year Commitment to the Living Transmission of the Gurdjieff Movements

There are moments in a lineage when preservation and renewal must happen at the same time. This offering is one of those moments.

Beginning in 2026, we are entering a sustained, multi-year engagement with the Obligatories and the 39/46 Series of the Gurdjieff Movements—approached not as choreography to master, but as an embodied body of inner work to be received, refined, and carried forward with care.

This is an invitation into conscious stewardship of the Movements.

The Work

The Gurdjieff Movements are not simply exercises or dances. They are a precise language of movement, attention, and inner participation, designed to bring the whole human being into relationship—body, feeling, and mind.

Each Movement asks something exacting of us:

  • To be present
  • To coordinate inner and outer
  • To encounter our habits, resistances, and capacities directly

The Movements work on us over time; their meaning reveals itself through repetition, struggle, humility, and sincere effort. Precision of form matters—not as an aesthetic goal, but because it creates the conditions for inner work to take place.

Practiced together, the Movements generate a shared field that supports remembrance, listening, and transformation. They connect us to a lineage while asking us to become conscious participants in its continuation. This program approaches the Movements as an ongoing tradition—something to be received with humility, practiced with care, and transmitted with responsibility.

Aim of the Program

This initiative holds a dual aim:

Inner Work
Deepening presence, self-remembering, and harmonized three-centered coordination through sustained engagement.

Outer Form
Preserving clarity, subtle detail, and qualitative integrity in the transmission of the Obligatories and the 39/46 Series.

At its heart, this is an active archive—a collective process of embodiment, refinement, and responsibility.

Who This Is For

This invitation is for those who:

  • Love the Movements and wish to deepen their Work with them
  • Want to learn or refine the Obligatories and the 39/46 Series
  • Feel called to the Movements practice
  • Recognize the importance of preserving quality in the lineage

Participants are asked to engage both inwardly and outwardly, with sincerity and steadiness.

Structure

The work unfolds through a hybrid rhythm of online continuity and in-person depth.

Online Class

Sundays | 9:00–11:15am PT | 12:00–2:15pm ET

Each class is hosted by Heather Ruce and Carol Squire and includes work with 2–3 Movements taught by Deborah Rose Longo (and, at times, additional teachers), along with contextual background, careful refinement, and integration.

Participants register by series to support continuity. Recordings are available for registered participants.

Online preparation allows us to enter retreats ready to work.

In-Person Retreats

Retreats provide the depth and shared field necessary to go further together.

Certain Movements—especially within the 39/46 Series—require a sufficiently strong group body, and a specific number of participants, to fully manifest their form and inner demand. For this reason, we hope to gather enough participants in person at each retreat to work the Movements as they were intended.

There is something in the Movements that only reveals itself in the group body.
